Key Points:

  • Adult content is now officially allowed on X, but NSFW content in profile pictures and banners is still prohibited.
  • Users must label adult content, and only those over 18 can view it.
  • X’s new policies ban content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, or harm to minors.

X has updated its terms of service to permit adult content, fulfilling a previous promise. However, there are important restrictions: NSFW content is not allowed in profile pictures and banners. Users can share consensually produced adult nudity or sexual behavior, provided it is labeled as adult content.

This policy update was confirmed by X’s @Safety account, which clarified: “We have launched Adult Content and Violent Content policies to bring more clarity to our Rules and transparency into enforcement of these areas. These policies replace our former Sensitive Media and Violent Speech policies – but what we enforce against hasn’t changed.”

Previously, NSFW content was not explicitly banned on X. Some X Premium users had already adopted a pay-to-view model to share adult content, akin to OnlyFans. With this change, adult content creators can openly use X to promote their work, provided they mark their posts as sensitive.

Users must be at least 18 years old to view adult content. X’s policies apply uniformly to all content types, whether real, AI-generated, or animated. Additionally, the new rules strictly prohibit content that promotes exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization, or harm to minors.

By enabling adult content, X might be positioning itself as a competitor to platforms like OnlyFans, potentially boosting its revenue as adult content creators turn to X.
