Volvo and Polestar are preparing to deploy the usual mass software patches for vehicles using Android Automotive. The next generation of the system, which corresponds to version 12, offers new capabilities that make the driving process easier and safer than the previous generation.
What’s New?
- Android Automotive 12: This update delivers the latest version of the Android Automotive operating system, laying the groundwork for future developments from Google and third-party app developers.
- Improved Voice Assistant Interaction: A new messaging application allows drivers to interact with some of their most recent messages directly on the center display, enhancing communication through the voice assistant.
- Enhanced Privacy: Users who haven’t agreed to Google’s terms of service will see related Google apps greyed out. Tapping these apps leads directly to the Terms of Service for informed consent.
- Offline Traffic Sign Information: Even without accepting Google’s terms, drivers can access traffic sign information, promoting safety awareness.
- Microphone Usage Indicator: A microphone icon in the top bar indicates when the microphone is in use, ensuring transparency.
- Automatic Steering Wheel Heating (Select Models): This update activates the steering wheel heating when pre-conditioning the car’s climate control in colder weather (for select 2023 and earlier models).
- Improved Heating Display: Heating symbols now display correctly even when the parking camera view is open.
- Security Patch Level Update: The update includes an improved Security Patch Level (SPL) for enhanced system protection.
- Reduced Vibration at Low Speeds (2024 Models): This update offers a smoother driving experience by minimizing vibrations during gentle acceleration at low speeds (applicable to 2024 model year vehicles).
- Traffic Sign Recognition Improvements (Europe): Drivers in Europe will benefit from enhanced traffic sign recognition accuracy (applicable to 2024 model year vehicles manufactured after week 46/2023).
- Range App Enhancements: The update adds an “Average Consumption” feature to the existing consumption displays in the Polestar range app.
Availability:
Now the start-up button is being pressed in Volvo and Polestar vehicles. Some people, perhaps those who got the update first, may already have the update, while others may have to wait a few days to see it. Therefore, this update reflects the partnership between Volvo and Polestar, which aims to provide the most advanced technology, comfort, and safety to their existing customers.
