TikTok is exploring new horizons with its latest experiment: allowing select users to upload videos up to 60 minutes long. This move, confirmed by the company to TechCrunch, represents a significant shift from its roots in short-form, vertical video content. Though the feature is currently limited to a small group, it marks a notable trend in TikTok’s evolving strategy.

The platform has progressively extended its video length limits over time. Initially, some creators were permitted to upload 30-minute videos, and the current maximum for general users is 10 minutes. Additionally, those who offer subscriptions have access to 20-minute uploads. This incremental increase underscores TikTok’s transition towards longer, more in-depth content, reminiscent of YouTube’s format.

This strategic pivot is not just about video length but also about content style. Earlier this year, TikTok encouraged creators to produce horizontal videos by offering better visibility for such content. To participate in TikTok’s monetization programs, creators now need to produce videos longer than one minute. This focus on extended content forms part of TikTok’s broader effort to diversify its platform and enhance user engagement, stepping into realms traditionally dominated by platforms like YouTube and Twitch.
