Many criticized Google for slow updates on Android phones, but they misunderstand the Android ecosystem. Unlike Apple’s closed system, Android is open. Phone makers like Samsung decide how long they update their devices, not just Google.
For instance, the popular Samsung Galaxy S20 didn’t receive the latest Android 13 update. This is entirely Samsung’s call, not Google’s. Consumer protection agencies pointing fingers at Google to mislead users.
The problem extends beyond Samsung. Many other Android phones from various manufacturers face the same issue. Google can’t force updates on them. While Google offers updates to its core Android software, manufacturers are hesitant to update older devices due to the cost involved.
Google does its part through “Google System Updates.” These updates improve core functionalities, like the recent update to Google Play Store where users can control data sharing within the Google ecosystem.
Going forward, Google will likely include stricter update requirements in contracts with manufacturers to comply with EU regulations. However, there’s always a balance to be struck.
