Key Points:

  • Missed Sales Targets: Sony missed its fiscal year target by 200,000 units, selling 20.8 million PS5s.
  • Sales Decline Expected: Sony forecasts a decline in sales for the upcoming fiscal year due to the lack of major first-party game releases.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 has reached a significant milestone, with global sales nearing 60 million units. According to Sony’s latest earnings report, the PS5 has sold 59.2 million units, building on its impressive start since its launch in 2020. Despite the strong overall performance, Sony acknowledged that the console did not meet its sales target for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, falling short by approximately 200,000 units from its revised target of 21 million.

The PS5’s rapid success has been somewhat hampered by supply chain issues, which prevented even higher sales. Earlier this fiscal year, Sony had to lower its sales forecast from 25 million to 21 million units. Nonetheless, the company managed to sell 20.8 million PS5s, the highest annual sales figure since the console’s release. However, the fourth quarter saw a decrease compared to the previous year, with 4.5 million units sold versus 6.3 million units in the same period last year.

Looking ahead, Sony anticipates a decline in PS5 sales for the upcoming fiscal year, attributed to the absence of major first-party titles until at least 2025. This forecast was confirmed by Sony President Hiroki Totoki, who noted the lack of significant game releases similar to “God of War” before March 2025. The potential launch of a PS5 Pro could alter these projections, assuming it is released before the next fiscal year.
