Key Points:
- Google introduces Pixel VPN as a replacement for VPN by Google One for Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Fold users.
- The VPN service requires Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2.2 or Android 15 Beta 2.2 and is now integrated into the phone’s settings.
- Older phones are yet to receive the necessary system update scheduled for June 3, 2024.
With the discontinuation of VPN by Google One starting June 20, Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Fold users are witnessing the rollout of their new VPN solution, Pixel VPN by Google. This service is designed to seamlessly replace the outgoing VPN and enhance the user experience.
The new VPN service requires either Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2.2 or Android 15 Beta 2.2, and it is automatically installed under the name “Pixel VPN by Google” from the Play Store. Previously, attempts to use this app resulted in errors indicating that the service wasn’t available for the user’s account. However, as of this morning, users can now successfully complete the sign-in and setup process.
The functionality of Pixel VPN is consistent with what users of the Pixel 8 series experience. Notably, the persistent notification has been removed, replaced by a simple VPN key icon in the status bar. Additionally, a new “VPN” tile is set to appear in Quick Settings, streamlining access.
Google emphasizes that this iteration of their VPN service is optimized for peak performance on Pixel devices, promising a fully integrated experience within the phone’s settings. Despite the current rollout, those using older phones still receive a message stating the app isn’t compatible, as the necessary system update slated for June 3, 2024, has not yet been implemented.
