Key Points:

  • To make everything safer, Google updates the policy to ban any ads which lead to dedicated deepfake porn and nude content creation services.
  • The novelty took place in the wake of growing issues on the subject of fake pornography that one unwillingly reenacts, and its wider implications.
  • Legislation also known as the DEFIANCE Act) has the intention of dealing with the problem of digital forgery and protecting the victims.

The prominent shift is evident from the fact that Google has tightened its advertising rules which now ban ads for the websites that create deep fake pornographic content and the websites that make synthetic nudes. This new update will become active on May 30, and it extends Google’s existing ban on the advertising of sexually explicit products to cover advertising for platforms, games, and applications facilitating the generating of appropriate and naked imagery through artificial means.

Many deepfake apps currently available may be used for illicit purposes, particularly deepfake pornography apps, so Google has decided to apply an update that will explicitly target deepfake apps developed for that purpose. According to Michael Aciman, a representative of Google, this update will be an important one where advertisements promoting deepfake as well as synthetic nude content will be blocked.

Human-powered ad review along with automation technologies (AI) implemented in the ad policy application enables Google to quickly eliminate all violations from the Google Ads inventory. Moreover, in 2023, Google ads showed that they saved 1.8 billion ads from their dismissal for breaking as disclosed in the yearly annual Ads Safety Report, from Google.

The prevalence of nonconsensual deepfakes in porn sets off uncontrolled levels of anxiety and advocacy by legal systems. Some of the latest cases that have drawn public attention, like those in which middle school pupils were arrested for making AI-generated nude images or adults got accused of possessing deep fake child sexual abuse materials, reveal that this situation urgently needs a resolution.

The DEFIANCE Act is an instance of legislative measure that offers means for the victims of digital forgery by the lawsuits that target the perpetrators of non-consensual deep fakes. With increasing pressure on societies around the globe to keep pace with the growing avenues in technological advancements, programs such as these could well herald a victory for the countering of AI in the creation of oppressive content.
