Key Points:

  • Global Rollout: Gemini is now widely available to stable users in Google Messages, excluding the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and India.
  • Enhanced Functionality: Gemini assists with drafting messages, brainstorming ideas, and planning events, featuring integrations with Workspace, YouTube, and Google Maps.
  • User Interaction: Users can interact with Gemini using emojis, image uploads, and feedback options, though conversations are not end-to-end encrypted.

Following its announcement at I/O 2024, Google has initiated the widespread rollout of Gemini in Google Messages. This innovative feature, previously available only to beta users since March, is now accessible to a broader audience. However, users in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and India are currently excluded from this release. Gemini supports English and French in Canada, reflecting its growing linguistic capabilities.

Gemini appears as the first contact in the “Start chat” FAB under the “New conversation” list. Once users accept the terms, they are introduced to a familiar messaging interface. The text box includes emoji and gallery options, allowing users to upload images but not audio memos.

Designed to provide concise and relevant responses, Gemini assists with tasks such as drafting messages, brainstorming ideas, and event planning. Users interact with Gemini in a direct 1:1 conversation, reminiscent of Google Allo’s Assistant but with unique functionalities.

Gemini extends its utility with integrations such as Workspace (@Gmail), @YouTube, and @GoogleMaps, though the YouTube Music extension remains unavailable. User feedback is encouraged through long-press options to leave thumbs up/down, star, and forward responses. Conversations utilize RCS but lack end-to-end encryption. Additionally, Gemini is inaccessible via messages.google.com/web or the Wear OS app.

This global rollout marks a significant step in enhancing user interaction within Google Messages, leveraging Gemini’s advanced AI capabilities to elevate everyday communication.
