Google has released yet another update for Chromecast with Google TV, marking the fourth update in the first five months of 2024. This latest update, labeled STTE.240315.002, brings the Android security patch level up to April 2024, an advance from the previous March 2024 patch. Despite this update not yet being reflected in the official changelog, it signifies Google’s commitment to regular security and performance enhancements.
Weighing in at 134MB, this update is situated between the 72.55MB update earlier this month and the 169MB update in February, which introduced Fast Pair and an audio output switcher. As usual, the release notes mention “other bug fixes and performance improvements,” though specifics are not provided.
This accelerated update cadence for 2024 stands in stark contrast to the previous year, where updates were spread more sporadically across the months. So far, users have received updates in February, March, April, and now May, compared to the six updates over the entire 2023 year.
In addition to software updates, there have been significant developments in the Chromecast product line. Notably, a sequel to the 4K Chromecast with Google TV featuring a new remote control is on the horizon. Additionally, at the I/O 2024 conference, Google announced that the Chromecast dongle would soon function as a Google Home hub, enhancing its integration within the Google ecosystem.
To install the latest update on your Chromecast with Google TV, navigate to Settings > System > About > System update. There’s also a minor firmware update available for the Voice Remote (version 26.6 to 26.7) which can be accessed via Settings > Remotes & Accessories.
