As it is targeted at some existing users, the new Macs in macOS Sonoma 14.4 have a “faulty soul”. While some users are thrilled with the update because of the new features and security updates, many are complaining that it is buggy and prevents external monitors from working.
The suspect has been identified, and it seems to be the USB hub support that has been introduced in many monitors. After the update, users are complaining that their Mac devices are also not accepting the mouse connected to their keyboard and monitor. This is not a common case: it varies for different users – some of them have not encountered any problems. But many users are now posting about this problem on several forums, including Reddit, Apple, and Dell-hosted forums. This raises another question of whether this problem also exists with all brands of wide monitors.
One user said that their mouse and keyboard somehow stopped working after the general Mac update also known as MacBook 14.4, while another said the same with his Dell screen and MacBook Pro. What was most interesting was that the same user mentioned that their externals worked smoothly when they connected the monitor to a Windows-based one.

Apple has so far denied the malfunction, and there is currently no problem-solving update in terms of software. However, some of them have managed to find an aspect that can survive the blockage. This is a process that involves you going into System Preferences, going into Privacy & Security, and then under the “Allow accessories to connect” option, and selecting “Ask every time.” After that, you’ll need to warm cycle your monitor (turning it off, removing the power cable, rebooting your Mac, and then plugging it back in and turning it on).
On the one hand, the move seems to be working for some app users. As for others, there is no guarantee that it will fix application issues. Fingers crossed, Apple can investigate deeper and come up with a comprehensive solution for those users.
