Key Points:

  • Google is integrating QR code functionality into Quick Share to improve connectivity.
  • This enhancement aims to address the occasional failure of Bluetooth detection in Quick Share.
  • QR codes will offer a reliable alternative for device connections, streamlining the sharing process.

Android’s Quick Share, formerly known as Nearby Share, facilitates rapid file sharing between devices but isn’t without its flaws. To address these issues, Google is reportedly incorporating QR code functionality into Quick Share, aiming to make the process even more efficient.

Currently, Quick Share relies on Bluetooth to detect nearby devices, which can include other Android gadgets, Chromebooks, and Windows systems equipped with the Quick Share app. While generally effective, this method sometimes fails, leaving users unable to locate their target device. Google’s solution is to integrate QR codes into the Quick Share experience.

Spotted by Android Authority, a new “Share with QR code” option has been identified within Quick Share. Although not yet available in public updates, this feature generates a QR code that can be scanned by another device, facilitating the connection between the two without sharing files directly through the code. Instead, the QR code utilizes a “near.by” URL, which currently redirects to a Google support page.

This update mirrors Samsung’s long-standing use of QR codes in its Quick Share feature, preceding its integration with Nearby Share. While QR codes might not become the default method for most users, they provide a valuable fallback option when traditional Bluetooth connections fail, potentially even offering faster connectivity in certain scenarios.
