Apple’s Live Activities displayed on the Lock screen has now become a powerful aid on the iPhone, with Dynamic Island offering users a direct view of current conditions and updates. The fact that there was no Google Maps under board, but class dynamics slipped the radar.

For the first time, there is a definite change in wave height. Maps by Google beta tests such live activities within Maps for iPhone users. This off-the-rack integration is certainly set to reshape the navigation feature in a way never seen before. See your phone’s travel screen, estimated time of arrival, destination and time, and all this yourself without unlocking your phone. With such an intuitive interface and a range of essential information provided by apps like Uber and Lyft, one gets live activity updates of the progress of their ride.

However, while Google first hinted at Google Maps integration as early as 2023 (in keeping with the iPhone 15 release date), the feature didn’t turn up until later that year. Built-in clear guidelines will eliminate the hassle of always flipping through the app. This option is already enabled on Android through the way notifications appear on your iPhone without any special changes.

The latest advances in the field provide us with a glimpse of a better future. Google has not been able to make this feature stable. Some users have been able to see their lock screen decorated with Masonic symbols and a layer of dynamic information detailing routes as well as estimated times between driving and public transit connections.

Testing sometimes seems limited as users on Reddit and Twitter (sic!) provide their reports of small groups involved in testing. One user described the function disappearing only for several hours.

Although there are some ambiguities regarding the exact release date, Live Activities on iOS Maps makes Google Maps more reliable and trustworthy. This integration, which has been widely expected by iPhone users, will bring a smile to their faces to offer seamless navigation. Showing a toggle on “Guides visible while navigating” in Maps settings won’t otherwise result in immediate activation, but it’s a nice twist as it’s the first step towards expected participation in the testing pool.
